Where I stayed
Sam Houston State Park

Thursday, March 1, 2012

We left New Orleans, heading west towards Texas. We plan to be in Arizona by March 8th, so we have  a little more than one week to explore Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico.
Our first stop was a state park near Lake Charles in western Louisiana: Sam Houston Jones State Park. From the park we followed a scenic byway to the Gulf of Mexico, stopping along the way to visit a wildlife refuge, where we saw many alligators. Some were hiding out in the water, others were lying in the sun, on the banks of the river next to the roadway. We also saw lots of birds: ibis, egrets, ducks and heron. Along the gulf of Mexico we saw houses built on stilts, obviously an attempt to protect themselves from the effects of hurricanes.
