After a pretty hassle free border crossing into Nepal we headed to the small town of Lumbini which is the historical birthplace of Gautama Siddhartha Buddha and so is one of the most important Buddhist religious sites in the world.  He apparently was born under a sal tree here in 563BC.  We expected lots of crowds but the place was surprisingly quiet.  It was such a nice change to get into Nepal whilst similar to India it is so much quieter and with so many less people.

We dropped our bags and headed to the central spot which is the Maya Devi Temple surrounded by sacred gardens. As it was almost sunset and closing time we had a quick look around.  Inside the building were the ruins of the temple dating back 2,200 years.  Outside is the sacred pool where Maya Devi was supposed to have bathed before giving birth to the Buddha.

After a long day on the road it was dinner and sleep before heading off in search of wild animals in the Royal Chitwan National Park.
