Stopover in Santiago
Entry 18 of 70 | show all | print this entry |
Not a great deal to write about our return visit to Santiago as it was just a day stopover for us, but after Punta Arenas is was nice to get to a reasonable hotel and a bigger city, and a bit more warmth. We got into Santiago late, had dinner and hit the sack, ready for the following day in which we had to get our laundry done (we still had some dirty volcano clothes floating around) and then hit the shops for some retail therapy. Next morning we finally found a launderette (we were struggling between the word for launderette and dry cleaners at one point) and left a poor lady with 3 loads and took the subway out to station Militar to go to a couple of malls on Ave Kennedy. The malls were very good with a good selection of shops and eateries, Maud got a few tops, but for love nor money could I find a pair of navy blue shorts, in one shop I am sure the guy was trying to explain they were out of season..... but it's summer here !!! That night to ensure a good meal we headed back to the courtyard on Pio Nono we had previously frequented, for pizza and strongbow. They still had the strongbow in, but at first the waiter was convinced it was a lager and they had none, Helen's face was a picture, as she repeated "sidra", "sidra" until he finally understood and relief flooded back. Again the food and drinks were good, even better was the hot chick wearing practically nothing handing me free Carlsbergs during the night for some type of promotion, not a bad way to end our night. Next morning we were up early again (who organized these early morning flights ?) at 6am to get our flight to the most remote place in the world -Easter Island.

Don't worry about missing the penguins, there's a great sanctuary near Dunedin on NZ's South Island. If you go at the right time of the day you can see them going in /coming out of the sea after a hard day fishing and watch them feeding their chicks (we were there in Jan).
Enjoy Tahiti and look forward to the next postings

Are you sure that hot chick was a chick?!?!?! I've heard about what happens down there! I did some research by watching Viva La Bam, very educational!!
This driving thing is getting more and more frequent! next thing you know you'll be trying for your driving test.
Take care and I'll look forward to hearing from New Zealand.
