On the way back to Trujillo the tour stopped for a short time at Huanchaco, which is a little coastal town near Trujillo, which is becoming a popular little beachside destination. The water was cold, but the locals didnīt seem to mind, and there were a few surfers out in the waves.
The most interesting thing about this beach, was the rows of tortora reed boats, drying in the sun.
These boats were used by Moche people 2000 years ago - seen in some of their ceramics (see Huaca Arco Iris entry), and are still used by local fisherman today. They sit astride the boat as they paddle, so the boats are also called "Cabollitas de tortora" - little horses of tortora.
