Compared with Piura, Chiclayo is bigger and more modern, and somewaht less dusty, but still has the same ugly outskirts resembling garbage tips, and is unbelievably chaotic. I thought Quito was crazy, but this place is insane! There are supposedly 400,000 people living in this city, and I swear it seems they are all on the streets at the same time! The main streets are jampacked with cars, taxis and mototaxis (kind of a cross between a motorcycle and a rickshaw), and everyone is sitting on their horns! No such thing as giving way here - you just push your way in, honking your horn! Crossing the street here is akin to an adrenalin sport!

Most of the attractions for travellers to Chiclayo are outside the city, but I found the central market interesting - hundreds and hundreds of stalls sprawling over several blocks, with vendors selling everything from fruit and veg, meat, and grains, to clothing, haberdashery, pots and pans, general groceries, and enough shoe stalls to put Imelda Marcosī collection to shame. There was even a small section where you could buy all sorts of herbs, potions, and other trinkets associated with shamanism.
