I was planning to leave Cuenca today, but the guide on the Ingapirca trip convinved me to stay and do another tour to Parque Nacional Cajas. I am very glad I did. Juan was the guide again, so it was another excellent day trip!
Parque Nacional Cajas is not far from Cuenca, and has 2 sections - a "lowland" section of cloud forest, at around 3000m above sea level, and a highlands section at around 4000m. We visited both sections, but spent most of the time hiking in the highland area. Even with the heavy cloud, and occasional light rain, the scenery was spectacular.
It reminded me a bit of Cradle Mountain and Mt Field National Parks in Tassie, with the misty mountains, lakes and alpine vegetation, but of course, Cajas is much higher! Our hiking trail went over 4000m, and I was pleased that I was not too breathless, so I´m obviously acclimatising.
