After tennis, we went to the Goat Island, which is a beautiful beach about an hour away from the house. Although it's called Goat Island, I only saw sheep there (my first sheep sighting, in fact).
It was fairly busy and there were a lot of different people there - some Kiwis and some tourists. I went kayaking for a little while out to this small island just off the coast, but didn't get a chance to go on the island. Maybe we'll go back another time and I will go on the island then. After kayaking, we all swam for a bit and then soaked up the sun - I only got a little burnt.
On our way back from Goat Island, we stopped at this small gelato shop and all got gelato. It was very good and refreshing after a hot day.
That night, I got to go to my first 21st birthday party here. In NZ, the 21st birthday is a big deal - bigger than in the US. They throw this huge party with friends and family. There's food, drinks, dancing, and speeches. It was a lot of fun and I even had my first alcoholic drink there (only one, don't worry!) I must take after my mom because I got a rum & Coke!
I got back from the party around 1 am and went straight to bed after an exhausting day!
Today was a busy day. In the morning, I got to have my favorite breakfast: cereal! I'm happy to find out that cereal is popular in this household too, so at least I have my staple food! Don't worry, I'm also trying other foods, but it's nice to have something to remind me of home as well. Gloria (my host mom) took me to her son's tennis match. He is quite good and won both his doubles and singles matches. While I was there, I got to see other people from the school practicing for cricket, which is a completely foreign sport to me. I didn't get to see them play, but it was cool watching them practice. All of my knowledge of cricket is from movies and they never show enough for me to understand it. I hope to see a match while I'm here as it's one of the many items on my NZ Bucket List!
