What I did
Later that day, Gloria, Tim, and I went to a local beach in Takapuna (I had to ask three times before I could remember that name). This beach was different from Goat Island in a few ways. The water was a bit warmer and the sand was what I would consider normal sand. At Goat Island, there was black sand mixed in with the regular sand, so the beach looked black. Also, the water at Takapuna wasn't as clear - I didn't have to go too far before I couldn't see my feet underwater. Needless to say, I didn't go out very far!
When we got back from the beach, we had dinner. As some of you may know, I'm really not into fish and will only eat it occasionally as long as it doesn't actually taste like fish. But tonight, I had a delicious fish (I don't remember what kind it was, but I'd never heard of it before). It didn't taste fishy at all and it was very good! I think the difference is that it is saltwater fish, so it's not as fishy-tasting as the fish I'm used to having in Wisconsin. I haven't said much about the other meals here, but they've all been very good! Gloria is a wonderful cook and I'm excited to try all these new Kiwi dishes. We all eat dinner together here, which is a little different than most families in the US, and it's a pretty full household, which I am definitely not used to. There's Tim and Gloria, who have been married five years now, Tim's son Sean (Sean's two younger brothers, Dylan and Finn, live a couple hours south) and Gloria's two sons Carlos and Niko. Not only is it a large family, but it's all full of boys! Growing up with just one sister definitely did not prepare me to live in a house full of boys! They also have two dogs (Zak and Xena) and one cat (Peter), but my allergies haven't bothered me yet and hopefully it stays that way.
I have my first day of orientation tomorrow and my classes will start next Tuesday, so hopefully I will be able to keep up on this blog (probably not every day) and fill you in on my adventures!
