Linz/Salzburg/Passau
Gary was not keen on the Sound of Music Tour to Salzburg, so I hopped off the ship in Linz with the girls. The boat cruised onto to Passau where later I rejoined it.
My tour took me through the Lakes District, stopping at Lake Monsdee to see the church where the wedding scene from the film was made. I wandered down the aisle humming "How do you solve a problem like Maria"; Just lovely of course.
I think I am running out of adjectives to describe these gorgeous places. The shop windows had the traditional dress on display, but so expensive, a complete outfit can cost up to 1000 euros.,
Then onto Salzburg, very very old, the site was used in roman times but re-established in 696; there are over 100 hundred churches, castles palaces, evidence of the power of the bishops. The city is dominated by the Hohensalzburg fortress high above, and many structures are actually built into the cliffs below.
Mozart was born in this city 1756, and the buildings record this.
We went through the Mirabell Gardens, very pretty, this is where the fountain from the film is. You know Doh Ray Me. We saw the cemetery where the film copied the type of vaults that they hid from the Germans. Really only the outside scenery was shot around this area, most of the other parts were filmed on sets.
The shopping street Getreidegasse is very tempting, but sooooo expensive. The shop signs retain their character by being rather ornate and depicting the type of store. Even McDonalds had to stick to the theme and they had to have a rather small M over their entrance. The other yummy discovery has been the chocolates "Mozart Balls", though I still prefer Cadburys Dairy Milk.
And so to Germany - Bavaria, shame I don't like Beer cause there sure is a lot!!!!
More entertainment tonight, opera singers performing Mozart and songs from Sound of music.
