Going backwards for previous days:

Wed. April 10 -  Docked in Arnhem, The Netherlands

We had the choice of two different included outings - art museum or the liberation museum which gave the history of the occupation and liberation of The Netherlands in WW2. I went to the Liberation Museum because it was unique to this area. The largest aerial military effort in history took place in 1944. This consisted on an airdrop of 35,000 paratroopers behind the German lines in Holland which unfortunately was a disaster. The air drop was accompanied by a ground assault of an equal number of combined forces (Allied combined - British, American, Canadian, Scottish, Polish, etc.)  This was code named Market Garden.

The best part was the personal stories told by our volunteer guides who had personally experienced this event. This event was retold in the movie "A Bridge Too Far" which I watched later on my  in room TV. One man told that this happened on a Sunday morning, and his family had just returned from church when his father ran into his room and told him to come outside. He looked up and said "it is raining confetti" because that what it looked like to him  on the ground as tens of thousands floated down. He ran out to the nearby fields and shook the hands of the Americans who were dropped in his area. Bob and Brant - I got you both a small book about this with pictures as I know you like WW2 history.

As I said, unfortunately, because of many reasons, this was a disaster with tens of thousands of Allied troops killed and many thousands more who landed successfully were later hidden  by local residents away from the Germans. Another guide told about how her family had found and hidden two wounded American paratroopers and how they had kept in touch with them for many years afterward. A very inspiring story that made history come alive.

We later went to an American cemetery where our tour had arranged a wreath laying by our veteran tour members. Very moving.

We have two more days on our cruise and I am only going to send text, no pictures as I have had MUCHO trouble sending pictures because of the really slow connection on the boat but at least we have a connection.

Those of you who have mentioned the difference in the times you received different blogs - in the beginning, I could not figure out how to blog on the ipad without losing everything. Now, I "sort of" know but am going back and changing the dates of the blogs to correspond to the actual dates for my benefit when I go through the rest of my pictures so they are not received in time sequence.

Joyce and  Lisa, many thanks for your remarks. I REALLY appreciate comments or emails from people as I get lonely here by myseld. Joyce, I could not download your lawyer attachment until todday (April 13) because it was too large apparently. Just do what you feel best or e-mail me a short e-mail with no attachments to pass on information. Sorry about that! I think ipod may have cut me off.

Lisa on

I remember going to the Normandy Beaches in High School and staying with families who had been there on D-Day - it really does make history more alive to hear the tales of those who were actually there and be in the same place. Glad I got this post before I get off the computer here at school. My computer just died last night and I may be off the internet for a while until I can get a new computer. Looking forward to catching up on your travels when I next get online!

Sounds like you are having a great time - I look forward to hearing all about it in person.
