The flight from Singapore to Cairo was SOOOOO long!  10 hours when you are extremely tired is not very pleasant.  We arrived in Cairo at about 10.45pm local time but to our time clocks it was 6.45am.  We had tried to sleep a bit on the plane but it was broken so instead of making us feel better it had the opposite effect.

We had no problems at the airport, which was totally different to the experience Alex and I had in 2006.  It is amazing what a difference that it makes when you can say a few Arabic words.  It immediately gives you additional respect and they don't hassle you for a taxi or ride.

We met a lady at the airport who is on our tour; Rhonda a nurse from Perth.  She is also travelling to Egypt for the second time (both times on her own - a very game woman).

The drive into Cairo was eventful as always with lots and lots of traffic and headlight flashing (they don't use the horns as much at night) and the driver not knowing which lane he wanted so he stayed in the middle of two.  Then he need to turn right and cut across four lanes of traffic to get there.

Because we were so tired, the initial impressions of Cairo were somewhat lost for Mum.  She just wanted to sleep.  We got to the hotel at 1am (9am Australian time) and went straight to bed after setting the alarm for 7am.

We had no longer put our heads on the pillow than the phone rang.  My Egyptian friend  (who doesn't want to be named) was calling to welcome us to Egypt and make sure that we had arrived safely.  He had good news.  He had arranged for Sal (Saleeb) to be our tour guide for the Museum.  Sal is an Egyptologist who works for the museum and is considered to be "the best".  He was also the Egyptologist that Alex and I had in 2006 so it was great to know that someone I knew would be our guide the following day.

A great start to Egyptian hospitality that I hope continues through the trip.
