The day began with the two of us stuck in the back of the 2-door Renault with the car alarm blaring. Laura and her boyfriend, Cristian, had jumped out of the car for a quick errand in downtown Popayan and, in their ever present desire to protect us, enabled the alarm. Unbeknown to Cristian, the alarm was not functioning normally, and shortly after they had ducked into a local shop, the alarm howled in a manner that completely neutralized our attempt to remain incognito in this nearly Gringo-free town.

The day ended with us being treated to a fine meal with Laura´s mother, Maria, and her boyfriend, Henry. After dinner, they suggested our stay in Colombia would not be complete without doing a little salsa dancing. Though we are not particularly skilled at dancing, and have never done the salsa, we agreed that a short stint on the dance floor would be fun. So we pulled up to the Rancho Grande and were immediately enveloped in the pounding beat of recorded salsa music. The beat was great, but the volume was ear piercing. While our gracious hosts placed the order for our nights libations, we quickly sneaked into the banos to grab some tissue for our ears. Now feeling like we would not suffer permanent hearing loss, we were able to get into the groove.

We had barely sipped our beer before Maria grabbed my hand and Henry grabbed Sandy´ was time to salsa. Maria and Henry were fine dancers and did their best to mime instructions to us. I would have been thankful to have had only two left feet on that first dance. But by the evening´s end, we could both boast to being "nearly novice" salsa dancers. Of course this glowing self-assessment may have been strongly influenced by a few too many shots of a licorice liquor and far too many cervezas.
