Sunday 22nd August 2004
Unfortunately, the air conditioning was just too good - despite having a blanket, it was freezing!

Arrive in Phuket town, where all the Taxi drivers offer to take me to Patong Beach for 200 bhat, wont find it cheaper etc etc and the Phuket town centre is kilometeres away.

I walk the 2km to the town centre (needed the exercise) and find a sawngethaw (truck come bus thing) and pay 15 bhat (thats 20p) to get to Patong, as the heavens open. Only one other westerner on the bus, and neither of us knew when to get off!

I'd gambled a bit on the weather on this coast (the west coast) at this time of year, and it did seem I was going to lose - it rained all day, and so just wandered the town, which is a bit of a tourist trap and sleazy, and then spent the afternoon in the pub with two Welsh girls, then watched Arsenal see off Middlesborough with style!

Monday 23rd August 2004
Decided to not chicken out on the weather and head east, just yet, and went instead to see James Bond Island - you know the one I mean, in the Man with the Golden Gun, when the laser pops up out of the island!

Weather improved vastly - hot, cloudy, with the sun peeking through as the day progressed. First went to soem caves, which we kayaked through, and had to lie as far back in the kayak as possible to get through some of the very low entrances, which took you through to the lagoons.

First lagoon was rather murky, and had fishy lizard type things crawling over the mud film surface of parts.

Next set of caves had hundreds of bats, who I'm sure loved me shining the torch at them, and then into a beautiful lagoon.

Then onto Mr Bond - the area we are in is almost like Halong Bay, with lots of rocky islands just shooting up into the sky, the seeing the rocky Bond Island was weird - must mention it to Roger Moore next time I see him..

Tuesday 24th August 2004
As weather holding out decide to go and see Leonardo's beach, ie "The Beach". Glorious sunny day,and arrive at the beach - only 4-5 other speedboats there (I only travel by speedboat these days), so not too congested, and stunning, as good as the film (if you havent seen it, or even if you have, go and rent it and get insanely jealous). The beach itself was quite rocky underfoot, but at least I have swum there!

Even better was to come on the other side of the island - a large lagoon, with sheer cliffs on three sides, covered in trees, with a crystal clear turqoise sea - swimming in this was just unbeleivable - I cannot express in words how good it was and the pictures dont d it justice! (guess you'll just have to go and find out for yourselves).

Then onto another bay, where crystal clear snorkelling, with bigger fish and bigger coral - this bay was a bit congested with other boats, and whilst looking down you were always wondering whether a boat was going to cut you to pieces, but still stunning - I have to buy an underwater camera!

Finally, onto to see some wild monkeys on a beach, who, err, turn up to be fed whenever a boat arrives.

Stop off for lunch at Kho Phi Phi - would be an excellent place to stay, and may come back once I've finished the eastern Islands.

good to know that your entire trip was not spoiled by the the rain...I'm on my way to Thailand and was surfing the net to find Hotels in Phuket when I came across your blog. Though you visited the place quite sometime back, but still I think your experience will help me...Thanks!
