Spent today organising the last few pieces of the jigsaw making up my trip. The priority was to make sure I could get to Arica by the 7th May latest. I had already elected to arrive there a day later than planned in lieu of a short foray into Bolivia.
There are several tour operators running a 4x4 service up to Uyuni in SW Bolivia. You are accompanied throughout, fed and watered whilst being guided through the sights of the Bolivian altiplano. Several stragglers from the Pachamama tour decide to book for the following day along with myself. Most are jumping off at Uyuni whereas Kathy and myself will be using the return leg to San Pedro for an extra $30US. The whole trip costs $130US and includes all travel, three meals a day and three nights accomodation . Not bad.
After booking the Bolivia trip with Pamela tours (recommended by Jorge from Pachamama as they are a Bolivian run outfit) Kathy and set off to get booked on the overnight bus to Arica in readiness for our return to San Pedro. That evening we all enjoy a last cheap, if rather small proportioned meal, before the gang starts to split up. Four of the Pachamama group are heading straight to Arica tonight so we eat early. Beer consumption is an abosolute minimum as we have an early start ( 7.30am pickup) and will be climbing to altitudes that make San Pedro seem like its at sea level (it actually has an elevation of about 2400m).
