Flamingo Sunset
Entry 99 of 112 | show all | print this entry |
Left Antofagasta early and quickly climbed to 1000m on Panamerica where we paused at sign marking the Tropic of Capricorn. Then on to Badequano to visit an abandoned trainshed and turntable where German steam locmotives lay idle. Very atmospheric place.
Then across the desert towards salt lake. My enormous bag of Cheetos popped open as we peaked at around 3200m. They were quickly shared with the others on the bus.
Then down across salt flats where wer learned about the effect of nearby nitrate mining before taking lunch at the oasis village of Peine. Saw cave paintings here that were over 6000 years old.
Then off across to national park to see sunset and flamingos wading in salt lagoons. Finally drove on into San Pedro de Atacama, my base for the next few days.
