Today is Matt's birthday and he treated us with two slabs of beer. What a public spirited chap he is! We treated him with a fruit cake that Macka sourced on the sly whilst we were in Cooper Pedy.  The cake was presented after we all swam at a billabong on the site of the first Kidman cattle station. The candles refused to light but this did not spoil the moment.

Earlier we stopped for lunch on a parched clay pan where the flies were out en masse. I will remember this as the most challenging meal I've ever eaten, scoffing a sandwich under a fly net is not easy. The only respite from the legions of little gits came from walking in large circles, attempting to throw them off the scent in the intermittent hot breeze.
