When you tell people you are travelling to Europe, a question they ask is 'Are you going to Prague?' Prague is said to be the new Paris, the bohemian hotspot, the place to go. And believe me, every Tom, Dick and Harry have the same view, and when we were in Prague, so was everyone else.
Prague is a beautiful city, with fairytale buildings, enchanting clocktowers and beautiful bridges. Prague is decked out with fine restaurants, enticing bars, expensive shops and loads of tourist traps. Above all, there is a slight evil behind the beauty of Prague.
During our stay, we were lucky to venture around Prague with our local friend who we had met in South America. We therefore got off the tourist trail a little and dined at local restaurants, drank at local bars and walked the local street to get a small sense of the real Prague.
But back onto the tourist trail in Prague, we saw some evil. As we visited touristy places like the Prague Castle, we were swamped with tourists trying to get there first, trying to get the better photo, meanwhile always sticking a fat head in our photos. The service from the locals was also pretty bad, but we started to realise, service in Prague comes with a little bit of attitude.
The most evil of all things in Prague is petty crimes. The old town square is re-known for professional pick pockets, luckily we didn't fall victim to this. But after a great night out at a brewery, drinking from a 3L beer glass, we fell into a tourist trap. Our group of 10 caught the metro home and were stopped by some guys posing as train officials. We were then told we had invalid tickets and had to pay a fine. TOTAL SCAM of course, but this is Prague and behind its charming beauty is evil. The more popular Prague seems to get, the more greedy and criminal its inhabitants become. Oh well, that is unfortunately what tourism sometimes brings.
So don't get me wrong, Prague is a beautiful city and we did have a good time there visiting things like Prague castle, the dancing house, the cemetry and the mysterious black babies. But if you ever get the change to visit the beautiful city of Prague, visit in the low season and  just remember, behind beauty is a little bit of evil.

You said it all in your last sentence most tourist destinations, avoid peak season like the plague. I have very fond memories of Prague, but that was 20 years ago and in the off season. Very few tourists, very friendly people and very cold, very delicious beer !!
