When you first arrive in Sri lanka and get out of the airport in columbo one of the first things you cant help but notice is the military presence, they are every where and tooled up there are bunkers with anti tank guns position through out the place. How ever don't be put off by this we traveled there with our 2 year old daughter there is trouble there, but very rare and most of it is contained to the north.
We stayed at ranwelie Eco resort 30 Min's from columbo airport a fantastic spot right on the beach and very serious about the environment it cost $75 us per night for this you get a cottage (sort of) on the beach breakfast and dinner, our back packer days are behind us, now we have Freya its not so easy to just rock up places and hope you are able to find what she will need.
But she doesn't stop us from traveling Sarah went through pregnancy in north caicos a very remote island in the Caribbean although we felt safer with Sarah giving birth in the UK Freya has only lived there for 4 weeks in 2 years of life.
Back to Sri Lanka whilst we were there we took a trip to an elephant orphanage where we had the opportunity to bath with elephants and feed them.
I strongly recommend sri lanka to everyone backpackers, holiday makers, and family's its a place that will strike you with culture although very close to India sri lanka is a far more laid back place the traffic is slower and more considerate, the people are great.
compared to Tamil nadu south India the fauna and country side stands out as un touched rain Forrest, all in all if you get the chance to visit take it you wont be disappointed.
