Back in Shenyang
Entry 4 of 4 | show all | print this entry |
We have just arrived back in Shenyang....we were here Sunday when we flew in from Beijing and traveled by van to Anshan with our Chinese principal partners. The past five days have been packed with new experiences. I was greeted at Oriental Middle School Monday morning with a grand orchestra and stringed group. It was so touching, I was teary-eyed. I spent the morning in classrooms, being swept back into the principal's office between classes for treats and water. Students help a "symposium" with me where they expected me to "present a speech." I did so, and then they asked questions about American things...music, dress, sports. Two "news reporters" then interviewed me asking about my favorites (book, movie, music). Lunch was at a hotel with all of us eating for qabout 1 1/2 hours, then back to school. When I have more time I will have to give more explanations. This experience has changed my life and my view of the Chinese people. They are a very gracious, giving, energetic, and friendly group. They are very proud of their children but also working to receive as many ideas for improvement as possible so they can continue to grow. They describe Liaoning province as a "developing" area and that is evident everywhere you go. For example, large cranes surround Oriental Middle School as new apartment buildings are going up on all four sides. The city is full of contrasts...bright new buildings along side very shabby, outdated buildings. People travel in Lexus cars, 1950 style bicycles, scooters, three wheeled bikes, cars, and trucks, donkey-driven carts, and by foot. The streets are crowded and though marked, people drive and walk all over the place. It is amazing no one gets bumped!! Surprisingly, after a couple of days I became accustomed to this and quit flinching:) Must go now, but will try to get everything up to speed and the last few days reported!
