I'm here................!!

Can you believe it? It is 7:15 A.M. here in Beijing and I have just finished breakfast (or that's what I believe it still is called:) Our hotel buffet includes baked beans with tomoto sauce, noodles, two types of white soup that I'm not sure about, hard boiled eggs (that is what I have had both mornings), rolls (that look friendly, but have very different toppings and flavors), pale juice, warm heavy "milk," light-colored melon, and COFFEE...tastes like I expect!
The plane ride over was easier than I thought...they kept us in food and movies. I slept about 3 hours. When we arrived we went for dinner and then to our hotel. I slept from 9:30 to about 2:21:) and that was it. Made it through yesterday, though, and slept better last night.
Yesterday we listened to a presentation by a deputy secretary of the China Ministry of Education. Then we spent the afternoon at the National Day School. Had a student hostess, watched and participated in an art class and listened to an outstanding orchestra concert. I taped a little of it to share. Was very good, but believe our orchestra could compete:) Yea, Discovery!!
It is so very interesting here. Much different even than I expected....more heavy smog, landscape is amazing with the old villages intermixed with skyscapers that are literally going up over night. There are a few sparse "parks" with little grass and a few flowers, but mostly a concrete jungle.
In the evenings we've walked down to Wang fun Ging street where food vendors (must be 70 in a row...all almost identical) with interesting fare of golden centepede on a stick, eel, worms, and many unknown items...aromas were unique, too. Amazing!! Last evening we went to the Silk Market which is a large bazaar four stories full of jewelry, antiques, clothing, everything....nothing with a price, but sellers grabbing you and pulling you to their stalls. I actually bought a couple of items....was a little nerveracking. However, at 9:00 the lights blinked, the escalators stopped and all of us almost ran to the exit. They practice Zero Tolerance with many things around here and everyone is quite to obey:)
Every meal has been unique and totally different than anything I've ever had before...no unknown meats or fishes yet, though...but lamb and duck mostly with many new (and fairly tasteless vegetables)....rice only comes if we eat up everything and we haven't done that yet!
Today we head to another school and then to the Great Wall. Our Mass. principals are an enjoyable group and we are having the time of our lives!! More to come.
