Thursday came and I decided to take a hand gliding jump over Rio. Shar was unsure but decided against it in the end-she is waiting for the big one-the sky dive.
We had contacted 3 companies but in the end we went with a company called Superfly and they were excellent to be fair.
We were picked up at 11am from our hotel bang on time and were driven in the back of an open air van to the jump off area. On route we collected 2 lads from England who were finishing their trip- they had spent 2 months in Africa as well as other places and were finishing in Rio.
When we reached our destination it was incredible, the landing area was right on the beach and the take off area was high in the mountains over the rainforest below it.
We met with my diver who luckily for me owned and founded the company. His name was Rau and was incredibly nice and made me feel totally calm even though I wasn't really nervous but more so excited. Rau works also with the navy and other people to alter their thinking process-he is involved with re-programming the mind and helping people who have had ordeals such as the poor kids in the slums in Rio. He has written a book and all so pretty interesting.
We drove up to our jump off area with U2 blasting in the car to make us feel at home ;-)
We then were told that Rau had done jumps with a lot of famous rock and roll bands like
Smashing Pumpkins, The Police, Guns and Roses, Gypsy Kings and he also showed us a dvd of him on BBC so we knew I was in safe hands!!
Butterflies started to come when we reached the top and saw where I would be jumping from- the scenery was unreal. The day was beautiful and Rau said wind conditions were unreal (that you would get 1 day every month like it to jump). To set the scene you are very very high up in the mountains. The take off ramp is about 5 metres long (if even) and it slopes downwards at about 20 degree angle. Below all you can see is rainforest and rich houses high in the hills as well as buildings and of course the beach and sea-the view was just amazing.
Once we got up and signed the disclaimer forms etc I was hooked up and went through some training with Rau. We were to run off the ramp side by side as fast as we could and when we got to the end the trick was to run and not jump. So you were meant to run as if the ramp kept going!
After some small pep talks from Rau we were ready to go-had my hard hat on and all strapped up. Before us were 3 or 4 other jumpers by now and I could see how nervous some of them were-it was gas- A few girls had to be pushed from behind to run because the faster you run the more you will be up in the air after take off. We were 3rd next so I said my good byes to Shar who was to tape me jumping off and then rush down by car to the beach to see me land.
We were now next and I was surprisingly calm even though the run and jump was crazy! We came onto the run way and Rau nudged me and to say jump like a champion and so we did ;-) I am not biased but after we jumped the driver with Sharon told her it was a good one!! I may even take it up professionally-not!
When he said go I was told to look into horizon and just keep running which I did-it was nerve wracking just before take off but was class and once we jumped the views were amazing. We were up in air about 15 mins and could see all of Rio including the beaches, Christ the Redeemer statue, Sugarloaf mountain and the rainforest below us filled with wealthy houses with tennis courts and pools. At one stage we were only meters from a flock of birds and Rau the spacer started calling them in his bird language. The jump was incredible and I bought some photos we took while up there with views of Rio. It was unbelievably calm up there even though you were horizontally lying in the sky with nothing more than a harness on you. The landing went fine-again Rau's words were to act like a champion. He was very pleased with the jump and said we started off very high so I think the jump was a success ;-)
Shar was at the bottom and was taping it all even though she was taping wrong person for a while until she was told she was looking at the wrong divers lol! Its hard though with so many divers up there!!
Got car drive back with 2 Americans from New York who said they felt just as safe in Rio as they did in Manhattan which was funny- Rio is meant to be dangerous but we have seen nothing really too dangerous even though night time is intimidating at times!
