It's been an exciting past few days –I hope you have a bit of time as this one may be long. We went to Hayden’s place who is someone I met on Couch Surfing. This was my first couch surfing experience so wasn’t sure how it was going to go. We took the train out of Sydney (by the way their transportation infrastructure around Sydney is amazing, you would never need a car as you can take a bus, train, tram or ferry anywhere within hours of the city.. and it’s pretty cheap) to Dapto where Hayden lives. He picked us up and took us to his parents place, where he lives, and we had a barbie. They were EXTREMELY welcoming people and hosted us for a few days and thankfully let us do laundry. They live in a gorgeous house built on a hill over a lake. See pictures below –definitely lucked out finding some awesome people to have us.

Hayden and his friend Chase took us camping for a night. The weather is warm during the day but sure cools off at night. Pretty much the only food we brought and ate were chips and sausages. We had sausage sangers for dinner and breakfast and A LOT of goon. A bit after dinner we were getting pretty tired and were thinking it must be pretty late as it was pitch dark out –turns out it was only 6:30pm!! We had a good night of drinking and Lauren and Kyle froze to death in a tent. Chase also works at a coffee shop and thought the way we drink our coffee (double, double) is weird. They have all specialty coffee places and serve it in a glass that we would normally drink juice out of. Below is a list of terms we learned when staying with the host family.

Eski –a cooler
Tea –dinner & tea time
Reckon –basically means "I feel like" in Canadian terms
Bogan –redneck
Flanno –jacket
Sausage Sanger –a sausage sandwich
Tomato Sauce –Ketchup
Pingin’ –crazy or using drugs
Goon – a 4 litre box of wine
Dapto briefcase – a box of goon in the town Dapto
Goon bag pillow – once you’ve drank the goon, you blow it up and use it as a pillow
Jetti –a dock

We came back into the city on Thursday afternoon to stay at Kings Cross in Sydney. Kings Cross is the red light district of Sydney… that kind of sums it up. We went to the hostel which looked alright. The guy at the front desk took Kyle and I to our room which had no sheets on any bed and stuff in garbage bags. The guy was super friendly but failed to mention to us at first that the hostel (specifically room 3, which we were in) had a bad case of the bed bugs. It had been infumagated that day… perfect. So we decided that they can’t be that bad, went for dinner then went to a bar for happy hour. I got a beer from the guy and he says “are you staying for tranny bingo?” A what?! Yes, 2 tranny’s showed up later to run BINGO. It was quite the show.

We went back to the hostel as they took us out to a couple of bars for free drinks. We met a really cool guy from England that was working at the Uni in the city. Turns out everyone knows room 3 has bed bugs. We partied for awhile at the bars then went back to the hostel as Lauren was waiting for an email to see if she got into medical school in Ottawa. Turns out she got in so the party continued. Then we had kabobs which are basically pitas back home. That’s the choice for after the bar food.

We went back to the hostel where Kyle and I went up to room 3. He flipped over my sheet and YES.. there was a bed bug. I freaked. Went down to the front desk, got some spray to spray on my bag then put it in a garbage bag for a night then shared Candice’s bunk with her. I maybe got 4 hours of solid sleep but Lauren didn’t sleep at all as she was terrified of getting bit. 2 girls that had been staying in room 3 got bitten alive in the beds Kyle and I had chosen. The one was allergic and had blisters all over her skin –wasn’t pretty. So we spent the night in the not so nice hostel and left first thing in the morning and came back to the same one we’d stayed at the weekend before. Turns out it is known around town the hostel we were staying at has bed bugs.

We bought tickets to travel around on any transportation for the day. Kyle and I went to the Sydney Olympic park which was awesome. The place was huge and no one was there. There are pictures below on that. We then took the ferry and went under the Harbour Bridge.

Our friend Charlene was to meet us this morning at the hostel. Turns out she somehow missed the plane connecting in LA so isn’t arriving until tomorrow morning. We’re heading up to the Blue Mountains for hiking and canyoning tomorrow. Should be awesome! That is all for now –enjoy the pictures.

One more random thing we’ve noticed here is that drinking seems to be allowed anywhere except where there is a sign that is a designated “no alcohol zone.” We saw a lady grocery shopping, paying and drinking a corona. Strange…
