Meeting more locals!
Entry 261 of 270 | show all | print this entry |
The best thing about the Base Hostel is definitely the ground floor bar. The social aspect of this hostel is probably one of the best I've been to and the modern decour makes for a classy night. I can recommend Base for other backpackers but be warned of the cramped and stuffy rooms and noisy doors. Everything else is excellent in terms of hostels. It was a great night last night... met several backpackers from Sao Paulo (great to catch up with Brazillians after such a short time of leaving the country), English and a local guy, Michael who lives here in St Kilda. I also met a couple of guys from France... Bordeaux... who invited me to join them on their 1 month journey to Broome. They have a van and plan to do it rough, sleeping on the side of the road etc. I especially liked one guy who was really down to earth, had his guitar with him, and a real laugh. I would of jumped at the chance to travel with them if I didn t have to go back to work. This is exactly the way to tour this country and what a fantastic journey it would of been to document... I can just imagine what a fantastic, albeit difficult at times, journey they ll have. Damn I m jealous. I am definitely still hung over from last night... had a huge night of heaps of Tooheys New and ended up going back to Michael's house for more drinks... he rents a room in a large mansion for 130 a week. I ended up crashing out there. I haven't had a big night like that for ages, and it is always better when you meet locals to do it with. I've since met more friendly English guys who have moved into the dorm... 3 of them who flew from Perth this morning. They were saying how long the flight was!!!!! I'm sorry guys... can't empathise. Try 26 hours from Rio to Sydney! I put my hat off to the social element of hostels... will miss it. But am looking forward to having my own space in relatively luxurious surroundings. A great Xmas present! Oh, and the restaurants here in St Kilda are oustanding. The service and food is truly awesome and, like Thailand, I am just enjoying every minute here in Melbourne and can't wait to return for my next school hols... April. I am staggered at the differences in local mentality between here and Sydney... the locals are so very friendly. Melbourne has clearly become my favourite city and I can easily see myself living here. For international visitors reading this, Melbourne is an absolute must. Don't come to Australia unless you have Melbourne on your itinerary.
