Gab... again!

Today was unbelievable to say the least. The hostel receptionist forgot to book my tour last night so I was waiting in the hostel´s reception at 8am with nowhere to go. I desperately flagged her down and pled with her to find me a tour to view the whales... the main reason for being here. Luckily, there was a space available on one last tour bus and I was away within 15 minutes.
I was rearing to do yet another tour alone when alas, law and behold, there is Gabrielle sitting on the bus. What the? I had no idea that she would be in this region of the continent let alone on this tour... one of many. This has got to rate as being the most amazing coincidence on this trip RTW and I can´t believe that we keep bumping into each other given that it has all been unplanned. Gab made a last ditch to get on the tour as well, and was very disappointed to have spent $500 on a flight from Bariloche to Puerto Madryn and thought everything had to happen for a reason... five seconds before I appeared from the front of the Chepatoginia hostel. Bumping into me amazed her as much as I... great stuff!
To say the least, we spent the next 8 hours of the tour catching up on every detail of our lives and it was absolutely wonderful to spend this tour with Gab... I put my hat off to her for travelling through this continent on her own and I´m so glad to keep bumping into her. The tour was made a lot more fun having to do it with someone... the wildlife was nowhere in abundance as I was expecting but I still enjoyed going out on the boat to view the gigantic Southern Right Whales. Humungous! The boat journey was very rough, made equally more fun by standing at the tip of the boat´s bow. The waves were huge, and it was an eery feeling bumping into the waves with huge southern white whales just below us. During the tour, we drove to several vantage points on Valdes Peninsula, which narrows to 7km wide on its narrowest point. We saw lots of lazy elephant seals, a couple of ocre whales, cute penguins (love their yawn) and nasty seagulls which are causing a real problem for the whales (they peck at the whale´s humps, causing the whales distress). They are a huge pain in the backside everywhere in the world... maybe a scientist can create a plan for wiping them out completely!
I´m hoping to catch up with Gab in Buenos Aires on Monday. I have recently left Gab for she is catching an 8pm bus to BA. At 9.30pm, I travel to Bariloche for 1 night. Today has been really great and it was equally great to share it with Gab... looking forward to the next leg of my southern cone route through South America. I´m starting to really enjoy the Argentinians and their way of life. More thumbnails ...
