Perito Moreno
Entry 224 of 270 | show all | print this entry |
Today´s excursion has made touring this part of the world unbelievable to say the least... Moreno Glacier rates up there as being one of the greatest natural sights I´ve had the pleasure to tour this year. If you come down to this part of the world, you MUST go out of your way to see this all almighty glacier. I only saw a small fragment of it but went through the day feeling totally satisfied and in awe as to the grandeur of this 60km long and 60m high (15 stories) ice structure.
During the tour, I hung around Rishi and Nena... a pair of cousins, initially from India but living in London also on RTW journeys. They are into their first month and will be heading to Australia on Christmas Day. Interestingly, since starting this trip, I have developed a new found interest in India... I was adamant I would never visit but am starting to get the urge to travel to this country. One of my best friends in high school was Indian, and I have met nothing but good people from this continent.
Anyway, my tour bus picked me up from the hostel at 8.10am, and for $US53 (all inclusive including the boat ride, park entrance and tour fee), I got to observe this stunning structure first hand. The tour group was huge... about 42 people so had all sorts of people... independent, couples, groups etc. so afforded a good selection of people to talk to. They were much better than the group two days ago. I had a good time with one girl in particular, who I think was Argentinian and spoke no English... she liked having her photos taken with me and we laughed a lot on the boat... which I needed... haven´t been feeling that good over the last 3 days.
Anyway, more info on the glacier downloaded from the internet
Perito Moreno glacier. The Perito Moreno glacier is found inside the Nacional Los Glaciares park in Santa Cruz. Different perspectives and views of the huge glacier are possible when taking one of the access roads. The glacier dates back two million years.
Inside the Glaciers National Park (Santa Cruz) you will find the Perito Moreno. The measures of this glacier are approximately 5km in length and 60meters rising above the Argentino lake. The difference present with other glaciers is that not only ice detachments are present but you can also see huge blocks of ice simply breaking in half..
The wall of this glacier imposes itself on the Icebergs channel. This process gives origin to a large body of water. When waters in the Brazo Rico side of lake Argentino start growing, they also start pressing against this big mass of ice. Parts of this wall soften and fall into the water making extremely loud noises.
Different guided trips take you to this 2million year old glacier. The opportunities to admire this mass of ice and walks over it, all offer optional perspectives.
