Nothing much to do in Puerto Natales
Entry 221 of 270 | show all | print this entry |
I arrived in Puerto Natales at 5.30pm, after a 3 hour, $US6 bus ride from Punta Arenas. The scenery enroute was beautiful... flat and green, with numerous lakes. A far cry from the Andean mountains witnessed only a few weeks ago.
Puerto Natales is nothing special... a small town overlooking a beautiful lake with mountains in the background. Even the hostel (Erratic Rock... there are better hostels here... don´t stay here) is pretty much dead... the busy season has yet to begin. Most of the restaurants are empty and the hostel I´m staying in has only 5 people, which I have yet to see or meet. All the ingredients to get very, very bored. But... I have booked my 1 day tour to Torres Del Paine for tomorrow and it was expensive as... 15,000 CLP ($US30) for the park fee and 18,000 ($US36) for the tour. Talk about a bloody rip off. I was warned about Chile being expensive, but for the Chilleans to charge exhorbitant amounts for accessing their natural parks is an absolute turn off of this country and I have no hesitation in recording this here for everyone to read. To say the least, Chile is starting to P... me off and I´m looking forward to leaving the country for El Calafate (southern Argentina) on Saturday. There is no turning back to Sydney now because I´ve booked my Buenos Aires to Rio tour... I have no choice but to stay here in South America until the 7th December. Have I made the right decision... I hope so... we´ll see.
But... I had a delicious meal of sea food at one of the restaurants recommended by Lonely Planet. But, once again, at $AUD40 for the meal, it was a bit of a shock for the credit card! The starter was very impressive... a concoction of crab placed on top of a tomato with lemon and the main was basically fish and chips. The most expensive fish and chips I´ve had whilst overseas! The restaurant was empty and the streets here in Puerto Natales are equally so.
Puerto Natales kind of reminds me of Geraldton... on the coast with wooden board houses. But the weather is nowhere as glorious as W.A... it is quite cold and windy at the moment.
Look forward to getting some good photos... haven´t posted any for quite a while now.
