Where I stayed

Im starting to recuperate from what was a very hectic 3 days of travel from Marakesh to Quito. Im very dehydrated, so drinking heaps of water and gatorade but have very dry skin.

Quito is a beautiful town, 2850km above sea level and full of rich cultural heritage. The people have been very welcoming.

Staying at the Secret Garden was excellent... highly recommended. Given my physical state, I crashed at 9pm and woke up 10 hours later for a scrumptious breakfast. The Secret Garden is overlooking Quito and offers the long termer language classes. Im picking up new Spanish words every day. My room mate also speaks fluent Spanish.

Ive started my new tour... 36 days from Quito to La Paz. Im sharing the room with Shaun, a 23 year old from London... 20 minutes from my cousin Wendy in Cheam, Surry. He seems to be a nice guy, polite and friendly. Gave up the double bed which I thought was a really great first gesture. Great first impressions. And so very relieved that Im sharing with someone around my own age this time. Gab gave her approval! Oh, and Gab is very much in love with the leader, Julio. Gab also gave the approval of the whole group which is refreshing. The gamble has been paid off. Im glad to be doing a tour at the start of my South American expedition given the difficulties of travelling here.

There are 17 people doing the tour... divided into two groups. My group is definitely the better group with 10 people... The leader is Julio, a Peruvian local. The hotel were staying at is beautiful... and to think this is a basix tour.

I have since replaced my digital cameras battery for a price of US49. No doubt a happy ending to your short story Maria! So happy that I will be able to resume my photo snapping.

So sorry that I havent uploaded all my Moroccan photos. I have about 300 photos but the computers I have come across are awful, so slow etc. so I will endeavour to backdate to 15th August and upload them. It will be difficult given that I will be on the road a lot for the next month, enroute to La Paz. We are sure in for some amazing treats including the 4 day Inca Trail to Macchu Piccu.

Tomorrow I fly to the Amazon for a canoe trip down along the Amazon River. This is sure to be one of the most memorable times of my life. Cant wait to share these travel experiences with my readers.

Gab has joined me on the first couple of days of the tour... to Julios approval. Today we have a van trip to several sights out of Quito, including volcanoes, the equator line and remote villages. The market at Octavala is one of the best Ive been to. The colours are exquisite. The prices are also very good... all purchases are done in US dollars here which is quite refreshing given I get more US dollars with my Aussie ones. At the time of writing this, we are in a small village sitatued only 1 hour south of the Columbian/Ecuadorian border. Very interesting... and what was most interesting are the eucalpytus gum trees. The smells make me feel as though Im home in the Australian bush.

We have 2 nights in the Amazon before returning to Quito. We then head to Baos and Cuenco.

So glad to be here in what is sure to be a very unique travelling experience. My appetite for travel has returned in abundance and Im very much enjoying it now that Im on tour once again.
