Today marks my final day in Barcelona so I decided to see as much as possible.
After sleeping in to a respectable hour, I made it out to Montjuic, the hill overlooking the city from the south-west and home to some of Barceloná´s best museums and attractions, some fine parks and the main 1992 Olympic sites. Being an avid fan of the Olympics, I loved the visit and can honestly say the site is absolutely beautiful... probably a lot better than that of Sydney. The main beauty lies in the fact that from the outside of the Olympic Stadium, there are amazing views of the city. The pool wasn´t anything flash, quite small actually, and they have removed the diving board. From this visit, I have made it one of my goals to experience at least one Olympics, probably not the next two! I didn´t visit any museums given that I´m all museumed out after The Louvre, so left the Olympic Stadium for one of Barcelona´s most visited sights, the La Sagrada Familiar.
The Sagrada Familiar is Gaudi´s life masterpiece. Construction begun in 1882 and continues today at a very slow pace. Today there are eight towers, all over 100m high, with 10 more to come - the total representing the 12 Apostles, four Evangelists and the mother of God, plus the tollest tower standing for her son. Given that I have been in so many churches over the last couple of months, I decided to surpass on this... I didn´t really agree with the 8 euro cover charge either. As the months go on, I´m becoming increasingly aware of my tight financial constraints and am curbing spending wherever possible... it´s either that or return to work! After the Sagrada, I ventured to Passeig de Gracia where many of Barcelona´s finest modernist buildings are. Trust me... they were absolutely phenomenal and I can´t wait to download some pics.
I´m off to Madrid tomorrow, primarily to attend to some business and pick up my much awaited replacement credit card! More to follow. More thumbnails ...
