Coming out of a low.
Entry 161 of 270 | show all | print this entry |
Jule, you will be happy to know that I have your pebbles from Switzerland... will try to post when I get to a cheaper country.
I've been on a real low over the last 2 days, as my travelpod entries will probably show. But I think I'm coming out of it now, knowing that I'm heading back to Germany. Travelling alone is starting to bore me now, and I'm hanging out for some company that the group tours afford, even though they also have there negatives. There is no way I could of travelled independently for one year. Staying in a hotel for the last 3 days has been boring, even though it's given me my own space. I'm starting to really enjoy the social aspect that hostels provide. I'm getting to the stage where I don't care about giving up my privacy. I have reserved an 8 bed dorm in Berlin starting tomorrow, 4 nights in a Paris hotel (cheap on wotif.com) and then 4 nights in a Barcelona hostel... getting accommodation is proving difficult here in Europe so I've decided to book it all just in case.
I'm basically spending today walking around etc, listening to my ipod whilst waiting for my 7.44pm train to Berlin. Walking around the old part of town, as well as a beautiful park overlooking Zurich's lake was very relaxing. I don't think Zurich takes the cake for being the worst place I've visited... I was unjustly harsh on it yesterday.
It is very hot in Europe at the moment, and no air conditioning makes it even worse. I've been sweating for weeks now, and it isn't likely to get better given that I'm heading down to Southern Spain and Morocco where it's in the high 30s. At least I'm not in Kuwait today where it is forecast to be 50 degrees. CNN news has given me the update on the situation with Lebanon, and I feel for the Lebanese people... I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there back in 2000. A difficult situation for both countries. I hope it's resolved soon.
As I was walking around Zurich today, I was reflecting on the gross injustices in wealth between countries... especially between the riches of this country and the poorness of Cambodia. I really can't say that I like being surrounded by the likes of mercedes, bmws, ferraris etc etc. which is nearly every third car here. And the clothing, jewels and accessories of the locals is kind of sickening. I've read that there are hoards of gold and silver locked under the main street of Zurich. I've also looked at watches that are selling for the 60,000 dollar mark. The materialism of these countries is really turning me off the region. Give me the slums of South East Asia any day, where the attitudes and work ethic of the locals are real. An interesting insight when travelling RTW, and is clarifying my preferred holiday mode. I think I will love South America and Morocco... I'm counting down the weeks now.
