Being a self-confessed fan of Sound of Music, I had to return to Salzburg. But I was rather disappointed that many of the locations are out of town or hidden behind gates (e.g. Nonberg Church where the opening scene was shot, along with the huge Festival House where the father sang that song Aldevise). I did the Sound of Music tour back in 1994 and so glad I did... for without that, I wouldn't have seen half of what I did today. But, nevertheless, it was good to return and check out the main sights. The gardens in which Julie Andrews sang with the children was beautiful (Schloss something).

It is really hot and humid here... rather uncomfortable though.

Today's rail journeys were good... the scenery is starting to get better and better, and travelling in first class on the Eurail is a fantastic way to go. I had to go first class... they don't sell second class Eurail tickets to people older than 26.

I left Munich at 8.23, with a mild hang over and arrived into Salzburg 1.4 hours later. I spent about 8 hours in Salzburg, roaming around the beautiful old quarter and climbing to the top of the hill for a dramatic view of Salzburg. It was rather uncomfortable walking around in the heat but still managed to do it with heaps of drinking stops.

I left Salzburg at around 5.30 and arrived into Vienna 3 hours later. I got lost looking for my hostel, the Strawberry Hostel, but found it in the end. My first impressions of Vienna was very negative... the traffic is horrendous and the guy I asked for directions was a real AH. BUT... after settling into the hostel and going for a very long 2 hour walk, I came across the most amazing buildings I've ever seen... it is moments like this I wish I had someone to share it with because I was in total awe. Can't wait to share the photos for the buildings are really something.

I plan to stay here for 3 nights and then travel to Rome. Croatia was calling me but will do Eastern Europe next time. I want to get to Spain and Portugal etc., and have since booked a 2 week tour through Morocco which reduces my time in Europe to a total of 6 weeks - I'm sure it will be enough.
