Finding accommodation in the major centres is very difficult... I have since checked out the situation for next weekend in Dublin and... you guessed it... everything is booked. I'll have to go back to the tourist information centre to organise something. I was reading somewhere that during summer, it is not uncommon for people to have to stay up to 60km from the city's centre. On finding this out, I was very tempted to ring Qantas and fly out of Ireland this Friday... but Amsterdam is just as bad. I thought travelling to Europe during summer would be a good idea... maybe not! The alternative is to be very organised and book everything before hand (up to 3 weeks before) through www.hostelworld.com but I don't want to travel with such inflexibility.
Last night was surprisingly subdued and the nightlife here in Cork is nothing to rave about. I met a couple of friendly Irish people... they like to take the micky out of Aussies but all in good humour. One guy I met could recall more Aussie shows than I could... talking of which, I caught a glimpse into my favourite tv show back home... All Saints. And it was the first episode of this year... when Nelson physically attacked the guy who murdered his wife to be in the day of their wedding. I couldn't believe my luck in seeing this because when I saw the last episode last December, I succombed to the fact that I wouldn't know what would happen because I would be travelling... bit of good luck. It will be interesting catching up on all that and more when I return to Perth next week.
Cork is notoriously difficult to drive in... there are 1 way streets everywhere. I'm also finding it difficult to find a restaurant when I want one (hardly ever). There are fast food outlets everywhere but I'm kind of over that...I don't want another fry! I really miss the ease of finding decent, wholesome $2 dish in the likes of Malaysia and Thailand.. I desperately miss Tom Yum soup and simple dishes like Thai Green Chicken Curry.
I'm staying in Kinlay House tonight... another 15 euro dorm room... room of 8. But with my ear plugs and eye mask, I should be ok. I'm finding that the hostels aren't as friendly as I was hoping for... there are lots of Europeans travelling through Ireland but they pretty much keep to themselves. The B and B I stayed at last night was, however, very friendly and the owners gave me a whole host of friendly advice as to where I should concentrate my efforts next week. Apart from a few (i.e. Bath), the reception and other travellers have been quite cold at the hostels I've been in here in Ireland...
