The group arrived into Shanghai at 11am after a fairly comfortable 11 hour train trip... I'm getting used to them. I slept reasonably well. On this trip, I took the middle bunk which has turned out to be my favourite.
On arrival in Shanghai, I was awe struck by the streets being filled with people... there are 13 million people here, and I instantly felt it. We arrived at our hotel, the Nanjing Hotel, about 25 minutes walk from the Bund. After checking in, Ciao took us for a walk through the immediate area to the Museum of Shanghai. I am over museums but thought I'd hang around the group for it would be ending soon. The streets are amazing... for the first time, I kind of felt claustrophopic by the throngs of people bumping into you and finding their little space in the space of millions. Shanghai is the most populated city in China... there is no way I could live here.
For the first time, I noticed bi-lingual signs... both in Chinese and English. But I have yet to meet many locals that speak English. Ciao took us for a delicious meal of Chinese at one of the many fine restaurants here... if anything, Ciao has provided us with a great variety of Chinese food on this tour. But I'm hanging out for a good pasta dish or bowl of noodles. At the museum, we looked at a very impressive collection of bronze, sculpture, ceramics, costumes, jade and furniture. After spending 1.5 hours here, I'd had enough. But it was still quite impressive, and the guide books say the best in China. We are staying in an impressive area with lots of action and conveniences. Tonight I ventured to the Bund with Ari and Rachel... such a fantastic sight, good weather, and an abundance of futuristic looking buildings... some of which looked like space ships.
