Day out in Nha Trang
Entry 60 of 270 | show all | print this entry |
Given that I had snorkelled, done a few island tours etc. in other locations I decided to take time out from the group's activities today. The rest of the group hired a boat to take them out snorkelling... to tell you the truth, I really needed time out from the group tour to do my own thing. And I loved it. I'm starting to get into the mindset that it really does not matter if I take a day of doing nothing given I am travelling for so long... there is no way that I want to do the touristy thing everyday. I was desperate to relax today.
The beach wasn't the best I've been because the sun was facing away from where I was sunbathing, and blocked from coconut palms. The waves were quite choppy as well... so I resorted to reading my book about the history of the Cu Chi tunnels just out of Saigon. But I didn't get too far because I had tout after tout bugging me for my business... children, old ladies etc. trying to sell everything. I find talking to the locals an interesting experience, especially getting the younger perspectives. The difficulties they face are quite obvious... I met one 15 year old who is forced to sell postcards to support his family. Given that it was a workday I assumed that he doesn't go to school.
In the evening, the group went to the best restaurant so far. It was a fantastic experience in that everyone wore their new outfits from Hoi An - Claire looked a treat with her mini skirt and high boots. It was great to dress up again, minus the good shoes which I miss. The boots are starting to look a bit worn now. The restaurant, called the Sailing Club, is situated on the beach front to the south of Nha Trang. The restaurant served spectacular meals at very low prices. The ambience of the restaurant made it a welcome retreat from some of the cheap restaurants we've eaten at.
Given that it was a Wednesday night and I couldn't really be bothered dancing the night away, I decided to retreat from joining Dave, John, Hannah and Claire for a night out on the town. And I'm glad I did... as I was waking, Dave stumbled into the room looking worse for wear. If anything, I've really enjoyed relaxing here in Nha Trang. As a RTW traveller, you can only take in so many sights. Given my love of big cities, I am very much looking forward to getting to Saigon... my last stop in Vietnam.
