Langkawi... unbelievable!

I am awe struck... Langkawi is a beautiful destination!

Bungalow on the Beach

I am surprised at how under developed Langkawi is... there are barely any tourists in sight, and the place has a sensational beach with coconut trees, cheap $1 fruit cocktails and bungalows littered along the beach. It definitely beats the hectic pace/touristy atmosphere of Penang. I suppose the main reason for backpackers coming here is because it's on the Singapore-Bangkok backpacker route, and to relax, sun-bathe, drink extremely cheap beer (just under $2 for a pint), and catch up on the journal! There are lots of couples here and I can see why... definitely an ideal honeymoon location. Whilst the beer is cheap due to the island's duty free rules, most other things are markedly higher than the mainland.

I'm staying in my own house... called a bungalow with a big bedroom and ensuite. But the showers are cold... I'm looking to upgrade to a nicer one I spotted today. We'll see how it goes. Once again, the accommodation rates are a real bargain. Most tourists I see seem to have a German accent... I'm surprised that there aren't more Australians here given our relative proximity.

This morning, I caught a 2.5 hour ferry from Georgetown to Kuah... the ferry terminal here in Langkawi. A pleasant journey, it was nice to see Chinese boats out the window doing their fishing.

I'm currently deliberating as to whether to stay here 2 or 3 nights... there isn't much to do except relax! Nothing much to do during the day except sunbathe... except for an island hopping tour I'm doing tomorrow. If I stay here 2 nights, I will have 5 nights in Phuket... and after a quiet stretch, I'm looking forward to Phuket's nightlife. I will take some photos but I'm sure they won't do this touch of paradise justice. I can highly recommend this location for couples looking for a week, fortnight or even month of recuperation!
