Another early start and we're off on a boat touring the Bay of Islands. As mentioned previously, it's a large bay full of islands - over 140 of them. Some are large with villages on, others are merely rocks in the sea.

It was a lovely warm sunny morning and the sea was millpond flat. We saw some local wildlife - mostly birds including a single, lone, solitary penguin.

Afterwards, the boat dropped us off at Russell. This is famous for being New Zealand's first capital (in the 1800's). Today it is a sleepy little seaside town that feels like it's stuck in the 1950's (if you've ever been to Cromer in Norfolk you'll understand). It's even more exciting on a Sunday...

After lunch and a walk around the highlights of Russell it was catch a ferry back to Paihia.

This may sound like we had a good, successful day. Unfortunately, this would be incorrect. The purpose of the boat trip was to find some dolphins and - if circumstances permitted - go swimming with them. The penguin was the highlight - not one dolphin or whale was spotted.
