We tried unsucessfully to get from Colonia to Rosario, but were told we´d have to stop off in Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital. Intent on making the most out of it, we discovered an Irish bar a few blocks away and decided to head there for Paddy`s day. Back in the hostel, we managed to round up a small band of like minded individuals, and headed off to get breakfast. Some Canadians recommended the Mercado del Puerto, a massive indoor market with all kinds of food and drink for sale. Grabbed a row of bar stools at one restaurant, and watched as the chef barbecued steaks right in front of us. They were delicious, and a perfect alternative to the traditional Ulster fry!

Landed up to Shannon´s bar for 2.30, but it didn´t open till half 6. Not easily deterred, a scouser had the genius idea of going to the supermarket to buy cerveza and wait it out in style. Pretty soon, more and more people copied her idea and we had the makings of a great Paddy´s day. Hours passed, hundreds of people arrived, and the polica sealed off the street to let us party in peace.

It was funny to see the locals wearing "Today I´m Irish" t-shirts, throwing beer over each other, and making shapes at the six hand reel! We even met this burly Uruguayan who, despite not speaking English, knew every word to "The 7 drunken nights"! Next thing we know, a TV crew show up and come running over after they heard there was an actual Irish person there, especially one sporting a suitably festive ginger beard!

An hour or so later, and loads of randomers are shaking Shane´s hand and asking to get their photos taken with him. Initially confused, someone mentions that we made the national news, with translations from the legendary  Irish-Uruguayan musician, Conrad O`Neill.

Best Paddy´s day ever. We loved the Uruguayans and were sad to be leaving, especially on a 25 hour bus to Mendoza!
