1/8 Interlarken in the afternoon.

We arrived in Switzerland on Swiss National Day, so there were even more Swiss flags around than usual. We found a great camping ground down next to the river, I wanted to go for a swim but after putting my hand in the water, which felt like it had come straight from the Swiss alps (it had!) it was freezing, I changed my mind! As soon as we arrived there were loud bangs and smoke, I was freaking out, no one around us seemed to care, Shane let me know that they were fireworks that the kids were setting off, it sounded like we were under attack Shane wanted to re-live his childhood, but we couldn't find any to set off ourselves, maybe in Holland?

We have been really lucky with the weather; even London was quite nice, until now.

Camping and raining don’t mix! We must say a special thank-you to the random old lady who put the windows down on the tent, whilst we decided to go for a walk and got caught in a huge thunder storm. It took us 20min to get back to the tent, at which point we were totally saturated and thinking we were going to have to dry our sleeping bags under the hand dryer, the old lady started laughing and waving, she saved the day and we had a dry bed to sleep in. It took us a while to get back because I had thongs on (yes my favourite wearing thin rivers $4.95pair that are very old) and Shane had his crocs on and we were slipping all over the roads and foot paths. I managed to get back without falling over.

Shane decided that bread dipped in cheese was not for him so ditched the local Swiss food for a Mr Big Burger. We got some more local beer and a bottle of wine and sat at the camping ground in the camping kitchen next to the river and dried out watching the storm continue to roll in. We had planned to go back into the town to watch the fireworks, although we ended up sitting in the back on the station wagon and watched them from afar as the storm became really heavy and we didn’t fancy getting saturated again. Shane even pulled out the emergency poncho for me to get to the toilet!

We managed to pick a camping spot right next to an annoying loud pommie guy for the second night in a row! We now know all about some very random topics, including how to wipe your bottom properly so you don’t smell....what the? I was 'that person’ who did the ‘shhhhh or go somewhere else!!!’

Interlarken is such a beautiful town with a big river running through the middle, the water is pristine. There are mountains that surround the town on all sides, such an incredible backdrop. There is every Swiss army knife ever made on display in this town, Shane started looking, but had to sleep on which knife he was going to purchase, big decision to make!

The water was so good that we poured the water that we had bought from tesco down the drain to fill up all our bottles with the free yummy water, we’ll have a break from the fizzante water while we have Swiss water to drink!

There are no water restrictions here, I had a really, really long shower ahhhhhh so nice. There was a drinking fountain that just continually flows, such a weird sight for us.

Tunnels driven through to get to Interlarken- 12

Chocolate update: My Beligum chocolates did not make it, they got wet in the storm and then the ants really enjoyed them, at least someone got to eat them I suppose. I started an ant investation in the doorway of the tent. Whoops.  Lucky I could replace them with Swiss Chocolate mmmmmmm :)
