What day is it today? We can't keep track of the days= good holiday.
We have only been away 7 days and it feels like we have been
travelling for weeks, which is great because it means we still have 5 weeks of
travelling to go. Today we got up and had a look around the town of Interlarken
again; Shane had a big decision to make....which new army knife was going to
join his collection at home? After many shops and knife demonstrations he
decided on the Wenger Ranger 74
extra screwdriver attachments! I’ll post a picture rather than describe each
We then set off to drive through the Swiss Alps. The GPS had
been quite good at calculating the trip times and for only a few hundred km’s
it was tell us it was going to take a few hours, as we started driving the GPS
kept recalculating and the estimated time of arrival was getting later and
later. We now understand why we paid the Swiss road tax, the roads are so
dangerous. Thin and hairpin bends every 10min and then some crazy people riding
push bikes, throw in a few big buses and you have some pretty slow driving
compared to the motorways. As the co-pilot there was no blogging in the car
today, we have a right hand drive car and when you are doing such tight turns its
difficult to see who is coming the other way
above sea level, with the most amazing views in every direction. Shane did a
great job staying on the road and not colliding with anyone or thing. We did
have an angry bus driver wave us on when we were sure that the bus an our car
were not going to fit and we slowed right down nearly to a stop, that is a big
no no you don’t stop!
After the spectacular views and driving through the Swiss
Alps the plan was to find a camping ground at Lake Maggiore to rest our weary
heads. The road around the lake is lined with huge houses and fancy cars parked
in ridiculously small car spaces, with lifts going up or down to the house
which is perched in the side of the cliff
have been massive! Lake Maggiore is very
popular in the European summer and everything was booked out. We tried several
camping grounds although they all had signs saying full. We continued driving
some of the planned trip for tomorrow and thought we would find another camping
ground along the way. The GPS had no camping grounds in this area and it was
getting late so shops were shutting. The GPS found a few hotels in a random
town off the main highway so we went to two destinations, after some pretty
tight squeezes through some narrow cobble streets, some reversing tooting and
breathing in, when we arrived at the destination (as per the GPS) although
there was no hotel. Lucky for us the next closest hotel was the Hilton....450mt
straight ahead and like magic there we were in the car park and checking in
asked for a room for the night and when we went to the room there was two
single beds, I said to Shane I would go and ask for another room with one big
bed, Shane thought we should just push them together! We went back down stairs
and there was another person on reception. I mentioned that we were on our
honeymoon and that if possible we would like one bed rather than two single.
She said she would see what she could do. She then gave us a new key and said that
she had upgraded us to a king suite as it was our honeymoon! We had a two room
suite and a bathroom with a bath. We also had a bidet in our room. I’m still
not sure how that thing works and why there were lots of linen towel things
hanging above it? We left it alone in the corner.
So I had a soak in the bath tub with a glass of wine, my
Swiss chocolate and a magazine while Shane went in search of cold beer. He came
across the local bar where he sat with the locals and had a few beers. In the
bars in Italy they have little plates of olives and chips to snack on
Shane was wondering if I had planned it so we ended up at
the Hilton, I don’t know how he knew that it took me hours to remove all the
camping places so only nice hotels were left in the GPS....ha ha just kidding,
but a nice treat on a camping holiday!
Swiss Tunnels driven through to get to Italy = 35!
