We left our digs at the Hilton and headed to Lake Garda,
Europe's biggest lake to camp with Bert & Ina family from Holland, who spend
their summer holidays at the lake. To drive a full lap around the lake is 155
km of very windy roads. After about 1 hr of driving our tour guide (Mr. Garmin)
decided to shut down. We pulled over and waited... And finally with the GPS
fired back up, we were on our way again. We felt quite lost for a minute there.
We then entered a roundabout (one of about 100+ for the day)
where the only option was to take the lane to our left
car heading straight for us, thankfully there was no concrete barrier so we
quickly ducked onto the right side of the road. 1200 km and this was the first
time on the wrong side, but we could not work out how we ended up on the wrong
side in the first place?
Roads in Italy are like a bowl of spaghetti, not easy to
find where one end starts and the other finishes....Some recent road works had
us (and the GPS) confused for a while we knew where we needed to be but could
get there. So after 3 or 4 attempts doing u-turns and detours through shopping
centre car parks we were back on track.
We were relieved to arrive at the bottom of the lake and
headed up the western side for 1 Hr until we meet Bert & Ina at Camping
Alpino (Malcesine) where we will stay for four nights. It was great to see them after they were last in Australia in 1994 (16yrs). We sat down and Bert quickly had a beer in our hands, one of
many as it turned out.
We then checked into the Honeymoon suite a little caravan
which was last on the road in 1963 by the look of it, but it is much more
comfortable than the Hilton and relaxing and has all that we need
Ina had decorated it for us with a sign over the front with just married and
The night turned out to be hilarious... Bert cranked up the
BBQ and Ina had made some nice food for the table. Bert & Ina have been
coming to this camp ground for many years and know the owners and everyone else
it seems. They invited a few friends that night Jan (pronounced Yan) & Hermien,
Luigi some of his family & the owner popped in for a drink and to say
Good friends/family, good food, good wine and lots of
laughs. The conversations were in Dutch, English and Italian. I think we were
all able to speak all three languages by the end of the night.
Drinks consumed by
everyone this evening:
-Bier (German Thuringer 0.5L 49euro cent)
-Luigi brought wine made at a friend house (white with
-German shots - Klopfer
-Bottle of sparkling from the camping ground (a wedding
