Hello all. I'm taking the day off from physically exerting myself too much today! Beings that I am probably going to finish about 6 days early, I can afford to. I am currently residing at the Once Brewed Hostel, about 1/2 mile off the HWP. Here's a recap of the previous day...
Left Wall early. This section of the hike is loaded with goodies. The first stretch of wall was at Brunton. Now I am seeing not jest the base, but several feet (there are no original sections of 12' wall) as well as the foundations of turrets and milecastles (located every roman mile along the wall).
Next was Chesters bridge, and across the River North Tyne, Chesters Fort. Tops to the folks at Chesters. A well organized display of the fort and a rockin' museum. After Chesters, headed to the most dramatic parts of the hike (i think). At Brocolitia, there is an intact Mithraeum, (Temple to Mithras). The altars and posts are all casts taken from the originals. Pretty sweet. From there it was onward (into the ever increasing and cold wind) to the tops of the crags adjacent from the Northumberland National Park. I'll let the pix do the talking. Needless to say, it has some of the most dramatic stretches of the Roman Wall.
Saw the fort of Housesteads, and then, in the last part of Friday's hike, Sycamore Gap.
Ch-ch-ch-check it out.
Anyway, I am a tad bit burnt, (sun and wind) and my feet are re-cooping from some blisters. I've put a couple holes in the soles of my boots. I'll have to see if they start leaking when it starts to rain. so far so good, dry and decent weather...
toodles all!
