Saying goodbye to my boyfriend after spending so much time together was difficult. He flew back to Australia on Monday and seeing him off at the airport and coming back to my room alone felt like we had been ripped apart. So much harder this time - because we both know how it feels to be separated for so long. I could sense his sadness on the day of the flight, how he was gripping my hand that much tighter - until I mentioned I was losing circulation to my fingers!
This put me into a bit of a forlorn mood for the next few days. Downtown Vancouver also had lost some of its summer holiday buzz and the homeless people were much more prominent. It was hard to leave the hostel without being approached by at least someone asking me for money. The night after Tristan left I had to move back into a female dorm room.  I was not wrapped about this but it had to be done if I am to complete my trip. While in bed one of my new roommates walked in. She was middle aged aged, dressed all in black with a leather skirt a tattooed back. I conjured up more friendliness than I felt and attempted a polite hello and brief introduction. When I was answered with only grunts or one word replies I gave up and went to my laptop.  She was muttering something to herself as she wrapped her bedding around her and went for a shower. Great start, I said silently as she left the room.
I was having a pleasant chat to the rest of the new girls I had met in the dorm when out 4th roommate re- entered... This time she was CRAZY!! No hello, she just went to her locker and shortly after said to one of the girls "Could you talk a little louder. I can't hear you." The other girl was stunned and didn't realise it was sarcasm so repeated it louder until she got a death stare. The girls was all apologetic but the lady wasn't having any of it and yelled at us again 2 mins later. We were told she'd had enough and for all 3 of us to shut up, leave the room and switch the light off on the way out! It was 9:00pm. As we left one of the other girls told her she should have got a private room if she did not want talking and to switch off her own light.
I was uncomfortable and felt this would probably escalate if she stayed so we went to the front desk. The staff must have been looking for this opportunity because the first thing they said was they were going to ask her to leave! I was really surprised, as I had just hoped we could be separated to different rooms. The silver lining is that it did give the other girls and I a chance to bond over our mutual anger and dislike. The next night I took them to my favourite sushi haunt!
