The plan on our first day at the new hostel was to explore Central Park. We had kept aside a whole day for this because we knew how huge the park would be. In a huge city like New York, where the pace of life is hectic and crazy, Central Park is a wonderful oasis of calm. I believe it was very clever town planning, as without the large gardens, open space and recreation areas I think the city would just be too chaotic and full on.
Emma and I walk to the down the west side to the bottom of the park, when we split up. She went to the Central Park Zoo and I went on the Carousel and then hired a bike - and rode through the park. It took and hour and a half to do a full lap of the park and it was hot, but it was an excellent way to see the park without having to walk the whole way.
The next day exhausted after such a full day walking and cycling, after a late start I made my way to the Guggenheim Museum
Well rested, Emma and I had an early start. We were catching a bus to Woodbury Common Premium Outlets for some shopping. We caught a luxury bus that had leather seats and lot's of extra space. Despite our doubts, our shopping stamina proved to be impressive and we managed to fill the 7 hours easily. On a high after our bargain shopping, we returned to new york after a long 2 hour bus ride exhausted with several bags in toe.
On Saturday we had booked a free walking tour around Harlem. It was again hot but bearable day with a light breeze. Harlem has a rich an unique history, and although it has had a shaky past you can see that the district is becoming more and more popular as a destination for new home owners. The suburb has over 400 churches; we walked past only a few. We visited some of the famous Jazz clubs and the Apollo theatre where the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Lauren Hill and Stevie Wonder started their careers. We were also fortunate enough to be given samples of some of the food.
