Endless Rain

Rain, rain, rain and more rain! As we ascended into Fiordland National Park, the rain didn't seem to let up. Like a good rainy winter day in Seattle, just not so cold. The landscape was very green and lush, so we figured it probably rains most of the time. After crossing the Homer Tunnel, we entered the glacier-carved valley with impressive, sheer cliffs gushing with waterfalls everywhere! While we stopped to take a picture, a couple of kea (native green parrots) landed on our RV and pranced on the roof like they owned it. We read that they like to frequently peck out the rubber from vehicle windows, but luckily they didn't seem to care for our RV's rubber.
We hoped the rain would ease up a bit for our Milford Sound boat cruise, but no such luck. We boarded one of the smaller boats at 3:45pm for a 2 hour cruise and the rain still didn't let up. Even though it was rainy, the guide urged us to "Get Involved" and stay outside. So we put on their red raincoats and enjoyed the view outside on the cold and rainy deck. The captain pulled the boat under a couple of heavy waterfalls, and Frank got completely soaked! Guess that's what they mean with "Get Involved"...
After our tour ended around 6pm we headed up the road back to Te Anau, but the road was closed as there just was an accident! The police told us that the road was closed for the night and to just pull into the visitor center parking lot for the night. Been stranded in Milford Sound wasn't too bad. We found a pub, the only place in Milford Sound that was still open after the flood of tourists had gone for the day, and had a couple of warm drinks before we called it a night. The next day, we headed back towards Te Anau, stopping by couple of lookout points along the way and did a little walk through the forest. We ended up driving from Te Anau all the way back to Queenstown by that afternoon so we could hit Deer Park Heights.
