We jumped on the plane from Sydney to Christchurch without a clue what we were going to do. Frank came to Kiwi-land before and thought things would just fall into place quite easily. On the plane we weighed out some options between time, flexibility, and $, and finally decided upon arriving in Christchurch airport to rent a car. While at the airport, we happened to find one rental agency that had a deluxe campervan that needed relocation to Auckland and thus marked the daily rental down from over NZ$250/day to NZ$80/day! It wasn't quite what we were looking for, but we decided this would be our ticket to explore NZ freely. It also seemed like a pretty decent deal during peak season given that 2 bunk beds in a dorm room in Christchurch cost NZ$60/day! Frank has done plenty of RV traveling in the past but Shari hasn't done any... so traveling in one for a month shall be quite interesting, we think.
Our two days in Christchurch have been pretty uneventful. The town is very compact and walk-able, with lots of shops, restaurants, parks, and a scenic little stream that weaves through town. But we spent most of our time shopping for supplies and groceries, internet & laundry, planning our high-level route through NZ and forgot to take many pics around town. We only took a picture of one street in Christchurch! It was a pretty cute street with pastel house fronts lining the street with the street trolley passing right through it.
We're looking forward to exploring NZ now!
PS: Looks like The Wizard, a local oddity who used to entertain the crowds at Cathedral Square, is retired now. So, no free wisdom for us.
