Shocking Experience

Lots more driving through mountain scenery till we got to Montagu.  Montagu according to our guide book is supposed to be the "ultimate Breede Valley destination".  Our hostel looked more like a B&B and was plain and clean.  Little did we know we would be in for a shocking surprise.  Although the B&B looked a little old, the bathrooms looked recently remodeled.   I decided to take a shower after a long day of driving and when I touched the shower handle, I felt a big jolt down my hand and arm.  What the $*&#&^@?  I didn't quite believe the first time so I tapped it again with my finger. Yes, definitely got an electric shock.  Can't believe we actually got shocked at this place.  Worse thing was that the owners knew about it!!   It supposedly just started happening recently, in some rooms, and not all the time.  They told us we could try another room but we decided not to chance it and not take any showers in the place.  It was too late to find another place so we just negotiated to get some $ back from them.   Unbelievable!!!

We recuperated the next day from our shocking experience by going to one of Montagu's natural hot springs.  That was a really nice place and quite a bargain, at R30 per person (about $5) ...

Our last stop before arriving in Cape Town was in the wine country. Unfortunately we only had time for 1 long stop so we chose the Fairview Estate in Paarl as our guidebook says it "promises to be the most fun of them all".  First thing we see when we pull into the parking lot is a cute little tower with goats hanging inside.   It's a goat tower with a little ramp for goats to climb up and go inside!  We did a wine and cheese tasting - 6 wines and 6 or so cheeses for R20, not bad at all.  We didn't care too much for the wines... but what was great about the place was they also made cheese and baked bread right in the estate.  Frank did like the last wine selection, Sweet Red, which went very well with the cheese tasting.  Best cheese was the camembert, so we bought 2 rounds for R15, 2 loaves of their delicious bread, and with some jam, had ourselves a picnic on the estate grounds watching the goats climb the tower.
