Hi everyone,
We are now in Siem Reap, everything is about 4 times the price as in Pursat, we're paying tourist prices again! Spent a couple of days at Angkor Wat looking round the temples and trying to avoid the bus loads of Japanese and Korean tourists. It actually wasn't as busy as we expected, and if you get away from the main three temples, you can explore more or less by yourself. They are really stunning to see, especially in the late afternoon when the light is fantastic. Angkor Wat itself is the largest religious building in the world, and I would say it has the steepest steps too, they were scary! We took a tuk-tuk tour round the temples on Sunday and hired electric bikes yesterday to explore. That's something we'd recommend, you can do your own thing and there's plenty of places to get new batteries for the bike. Just one thing, make sure they don't give you an empty battery by mistake, we learnt from experience that 20 minutes in 35 degrees heat trying to peddle the heavy bikes, is not fun!
The photos speak for themselves, the place is really stunning. We went this morning to the land-mine museum, sobering place full of info on all the different types of mines and the number of deaths and injuries that still happen every year. Near the Thai border there are still 2-3 million, one trained person can clear maximum 100 a day, so there's some way to go yet.
Also enjoying some foreign food, we even had two meals last night! Back to Pursat tomorrow for the last couple of weeks of work before heading to the coast and then to Kratie to try to see some rare freshwater dolphins. Then we're off to Vietnam!
