Crossing the Rio Grande...Well, Not quite!!
Entry 28 of 40 | show all | print this entry |
THE LONGEST HIKE Today Doña Zoraida suggested we walk to Ciudad Colon, which would be about an hour and a half. The two times I had been to Ciudad Colon in the past, I had taken a taxi for approx $2, so I was excited to learn the walking route. Hey, when you're not working every buck saved counts!!
I was also excited to learn a different hiking route, other than the three I was familiar with, affectionately nick-named by me as: Sudden Death, Slow Death, and Death with a Beautiful View!! This particular route was one Doña Zoraida hadn't walked since she was a teenager. We were almost home when we arrived at a small river (yes I know the Rio Grande title was a bait-and-switch!!) Apparently back in the day, there used to be a walking bridge there. Since the water was at least a foot deep, we decided against trying to walk it and had to backtrack about 25 minutes to a different route, much steeper of course! When it was all said and done, we had been hiking for well over two hours, which three weeks ago would have caused me to keel over and die, but today I felt like I could keep going!
