LAST WALK TO THE TOWN STORE
That morning, Caro and I were up early. Even though her airport pick up was before noon, we were able to squeeze in a killer hike to the town store, our last walk together, before 10 o'clock. These friendly neighborhood walks had us drenched in sweat and gave us a better workout than any gym. We really felt accomplished and a true survivor when finished!

Having Carolina here this week was invaluable. She helped me get set up in my new apartment, introduced me to vegetarian cooking, and walked every hiking route in my neighborhood with me, so I know where they are and can now hike them alone.

As she was getting ready to leave, Mackie came by to say good-bye and finally let Caro pet her. She also let me pet her for the first time too! A few minutes after that, Paco, the local 70-year old taxi-driver we be-friended, came by to pick her up and whisk her away to the airport. Mackie and I watched together as Caro's car sped away. Later that afternoon, Mackie came into my apartment and lay at my feet while I wrote on my computer. It's as if Mackie knew I needed the company and she has come back every day since!

I hate good-byes too; but you have a new friend Mackie. Dogs make good company.
