I've crossed over - literally. Yesterday morning, I crossed the Cook Strait from Wellington to Picton, leaving New Zealand's north island behind to continue my travels in the south island. The ferry crossing took about three hours and it was choppy, windy, rainy and seasickness-inducing. Can't say I enjoyed it all that much, to tell the truth.

But Picton is another story. Despite the chilly, rainy weather we've had the past couple of days, I'm really enjoying it here. The backpacker lodge is great - feels very homey and comfortable. Picton itself is a tiny little town with one main street, the ferry terminal, and not much else, but it's surrounded by green hills and beautiful scenery. I've met some great people in the hostel here, including a fellow Montrealer.

After arriving in Picton, we went to check out the town and ended up at the Seahorse Acquarium in time for a tour and feeding of the seahorses. They really are odd little creatures - fairly unique among all animals in that the males are the ones who get pregnant and give birth. Sounds fair to me.

Last night, we went to a pub in town that was having a trivia quiz, and managed to not completely embarrass ourselves (except in the sports category, which was a disaster; there weren't any hockey questions).

Today, I went on a wine tour of the Marlborough region. Together with a bunch of other backpackers who know about as much about wine as I do (read: not much), we got driven around to a bunch of wineries, tasting as we went along. And while I still don't know exactly what the difference is between a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chardonnay, I did have a really good time.

Tomorrow it's onto Nelson, the so-called sunshine capital of New Zealand. Here's hoping, anyhow.

Crossing my fingers for some sunshine
Hi Sari! Sounds so beautiful there. Can't wait to see the pictures! I hope it stops raining, I'll keep my fingers crossed for nice temperate sunny days in your future travels! :D Keep on trekking and keep on having a blast! We're all thinking of you over here.

Seasick????? Think back to skydiving...
Ferry boats are usually like that.....never fun when the sea is rough.
Picton.....isn't there a Picton in New Brunswick?
Seahorses????I'll email you a private thought about them.....never know who's reading this stuff.
Wine tasting???? That's up there with skydiving in the list of things nobody ever thought Sari would be involved in.

Love Steve
