We left at 5am and finally gave up the battle to get to Kathmandu about 10pm. The road conditions and the normal couple of hours at the border conspired against us to turn what was already going to be a long bus day into an impossibly long one. We had to find a hotel to spend the night in about 100km from Kathmandu rather than spend what could possibly be 4 more hours on the windy, barely tarmac'd roads in the dark.

This has been the longest day on the bus and perhaps as downtrodden as we dedicated OzBusers have gotten (a few deserted, anticipating the arduous journey, and flew from Varanasi to Kathmandu and got there in an hour!).

Still, we're here to do as much of the trip overland as we can and there are bound to be hard days. No doubt there will be more good days than bad!

Cool, you're getting to Nepal after all. I thought you wouldn't make it after you took the alternative route - did the weather improve?
